THE University of Sydney has been rated the best in Australia for the quality of its student experience.

The National Union of Students rated universities based on five factors, including campus culture, availability of independent advocacy services and student representation.

The University of NSW, the Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, Monash University, and the University of Western Australia were also placed in the highest division.

The Lismore campus of Southern Cross University was among five universities in the lowest category.

The campus's student association folded after the Howard government introduced voluntary student unionism legislation in 2006, and was re-established only in August, with a $10,000 grant from the university.

A spokeswoman for the university said it had set aside $400,000 for student bodies next year.
